When decorating a Marimo terrarium, substrate is one of the crucial part to further improves the overall attractiveness and appeal of the terrarium. However, what kind of substrates should we use? River Sand/Gravel River sands or gravels come in various shapes, colours and sizes, therefore it can suit with most terrariums' designs. River sands or gravels can be collected easily and usually won't come with harmful chemicals if collected from clean rivers. However, proper cleaning must be done for any substrates collected from the nature due to the risk of introducing harmful diseases or parasites to your aquarium or terrarium. Cleaning can be done by rinsing those sands or gravels with salt water and washing them a few times, it is advisable to immerse them in clean water for a few days before introducing them into the aquarium or terrarium. Even with proper cleaning, there are still risks of introducing unwanted parasites or diseases into the aquarium or terrarium. Sand from beaches Clean, fine sand from the beaches is very attractive in both aquariums or terrariums, however high salt content in the sand made it unsuitable for terrariums or aquariums with freshwater fishes or shrimps. Moreover, Marimo cannot tolerate very high salinity for a prolonged period of time , high salinity will "burn" the surface of the Marimo, causing untreatable white spots on the surface. When using sand from beaches, remember to rinse it and immerse it in clean water for a few days before using it in the terrarium or aquariums, daily water changes are required to slowly reduce the salinity. If you have a hydrometer, do keep track of the salinity. If proper care is carried out, sand from beaches will be a good choice as aquariums or terrariums' substrates. Decorative Sand or Gravel Decorative sand or gravel always have a huge selection of colours available to match any type or aquariums or terrariums. From gentle, natural colours to attractive, vivid colours, decorative sands and gravels can be easily purchased and only requires simple cleaning before introducing them into the aquarium or terrarium. However, not all decorative sands can be used in aquatic environment, therefore it is important to use aquarium-safe decorative sand to avoid any unwanted effects on the Marimo. Marimo Malaysia do offers a wide selection of aquarium-safe decorative gravels in our catalog.

Event : ARCON 2016 Date: 28-29 May 2016 Time: 11:00 to 19:00 (MYT) Venue: Penang Time Square Jalan Dato Keramat, Georgetown 10150 , Pulau Pinang Most owners keep their Marimo in small containers/glass bottles. However, do you know that Marimo can also be keep in large aquariums with fishes and other aquatic plants? There's a few things that owners should keep in mind when keeping Marimo in aquariums, we will try to cover as much as possible in this article. Chemicals? Keeping Marimo in an aquarium is possible as long as some precaution is taken. First of all, Marimo is part of the algae family, so dosing any algae removing medicine in your aquarium is a big no-no. Try to avoid using chemical in your aquarium, if you are going to use fish medication, remove the Marimo before dosing the medicine. Furthermore, some aquarium plants fertilizer might not work on Marimo and some of the fertilizer might actually contains chemical that harm algae (therefore harming your Marimo) while helping the aquarium plants to grow. Tank Mates? The tank's mates of Marimo must also be carefully chosen, good tank mates are those that will not actively harm aquarium plants, this include but not limited to Guppy, various tetra and platy. However, some fish that are known to leave the aquarium plants alone might attack them during starvation or because of their different personality. Tank mates that need to be avoid include goldfish , silver dollar and other plant-eaters. Another suitable Marimo tank mates is the shrimp such as cherry shrimp and crystal shrimp, they coexist very well with the Marimo and you can often see them scavenging for food on top of the Mairmo. Many people have asked us whether keeping Marimo with aquarium snails is possible? Our answer is yes but we do not recommend it. We have successfully kept Marimo with red ramshorn snails before, however the snails must be well-fed all the time or else the risk of them attacking the marimo will become higher. Lighting and temperature? Marimo generally lives under the pond/lake in their wild habitat, so they do not require much lighting or any other special lighting requirement. However, strong lighting should be avoid. Marimo prefer colder environment and should be keep in place below 30 Celsius.
