Marimokkori - an awkward/funny Marimo Character?

7/23/2017

In Hokkaidō, Japan, the popularity of Marimo Moss Ball led to the birth of a bizarre but funny and cute mascot character known as Marimokkori (まりもっこり). The name is a portmanteau of Marimo and Mokkori i.e. "bulge" in Japanese.

Marimokkori looks awkward but it is the mascot for Hokkaido. Its merchandises are sold all over Hokkaido and are actually very popular with the younger generation for some reasons. Initially, the character was considered weird and vulgar and did not do well as many hotels/souvenir shops refused to sell its merchandises. Its popularity skyrocketed only after celebrities mentioned the character on TV programmes. Nowadays, you could bring back Marimokkori as key chains, phone straps, T-shirts, and soft toys. Do have a look on which merchandises you might like in the video below:
You could also visit Marimokkori's official online shop on www.marimokkori.jp.

Marimokkori might not fit your image of what a mascot based on Marimo should look like. There are other mascots based on Marimo that look more decent. For example, the mascot of Akan Ryokan Association, which is known as Mizumori Amane (水森天音), is clearly more an eye candy. All Amane's photos from https://twitter.com/mizumori_amane/media

Simple Dechorination Guide

5/12/2017

Greetings fellow Marimo owners, this is a simple guide on dechorination of water.  Chlorine is present in the tap water as it is mend to kill the germs and other harmful microorganism which cannot be filter out. Yet, high level of chlorine is harmful to both fishes and aquatic plants. Although using filtered water to keep Marimo is usually safe,  it is still a good idea to remove chlorine from the water. There are a few ways to remove chlorine from the water, either by chemical means or naturally.

Anti-Chlorine conditioner

A convenient method used to remove chlorine is using anti-chlorine conditioners. This conditioners can be found on most fish stores and it is inexpensive. Usually, a cap full of chlorine is able to treat a 2 ft aquarium tank, but it varies among different brands of anti-chlorine conditioners, so check the labels carefully before using it.

Evaporation

This is the easiest way to remove chlorine from tap water. You just need to fill a bucket/container full of tap water and leave it in open air for a day or two , this allows the chlorine to evaporate from the water.

Marimo Tips: If Pieces of Marimo Falling Apart...

1/5/2017

Some Marimo keepers may find, to their horror, that parts of their Marimo are disintegrating. So why does this happen?

Picture

If only a small part of Marimo falling apart:

Picture
1. The culprit might just be your Marimo's tankmates! Fishes such as goldfish, silverdollar and crayfish would chew on the Marimo as food, while many other playful fishes also enjoy pulling apart your Marimo just for the glory of Satan. So keep an eye or two on your aquarium community.

Picture
2. Strong water current may bash apart your Marimo. While it is good to keep your Marimo in flowing water, tsunami-like current is just a no-no.

3. Other conditions that might lead to disintegration include water's chemistry and temperature. If you find your Marimo to start falling apart after adding medicine/solution into the tank, stop usage or dilute your medicine/solution. High temperature may weaken your Marimo as well.

If your Marimo is collapsing like a house of cards

1. Unfortunately, this might mean that the inner part of your Marimo has started rotting, which could be caused by many factors such as poor environment or negligence. Our condolences to you.
Picture
2. To keep your hope up, a severe disintegration might just be a normal propagation process if you can rule out the aforementioned factors/conditions i.e. rotting centre, playful/aggressive family members tankmates, poor environment/care, etc. Congrats to you as this is a natural process when Marimo divides into smaller parts to restart its growth cycle.
